ABU DHABI: UAE student Reem Al Bostami has successfully secured a patent for ‘HearMe,’ an AI-powered platform designed to revolutionise communication for the hearing impaired.

Developed during the global lockdown, the app provides real-time, bidirectional translation, converting sign language gestures into written text and typed text into animated sign language.

Collaborating with Dr. Modafar Ati at Abu Dhabi University, Al Bostami built the application from scratch at home, overcoming limited access to university hardware.

The technology supports multiple systems, including American and French sign languages, aiming to facilitate spontaneous interactions in classrooms, hospitals, and workplaces.

With over 430 million people worldwide living with hearing loss, ‘HearMe’ addresses the isolation often felt during everyday conversations. This innovation aligns with the UAE’s National Policy for Empowering People of Determination, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's status as a hub for inclusive technology. Abu Dhabi University plans to further develop the platform for broader academic and professional integration.
