TEHRAN:  Jailed Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been hospitalised in what her supporters describe as ‘catastrophic condition.’

After months of being denied essential medical care, the 52-year-old activist was finally transferred from Evin Prison to a hospital to undergo urgent surgery.

Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2023 for her tireless fight against the oppression of women in Iran, has been suffering from severe heart and lung complications.

Her family and human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that her health was deteriorating rapidly due to the harsh conditions of her imprisonment and the lack of specialized treatment.

Despite her critical state, Mohammadi remains a symbol of defiance. Her legal team and international advocates continue to demand her permanent release on medical grounds, arguing that returning her to prison would be a death sentence.
