Tehran: At least 14 Iranian soldiers were killed during a demining operation in the country’s northwestern Zanjan province, according to local media reports.

The incident occurred while Revolutionary Guards specialists were working to defuse unexploded ordnance left behind following recent airstrikes.

Large areas of farmland—estimated at around 1,200 hectares—had been contaminated by cluster bombs and aerial mines, posing ongoing risks to civilians and workers.

Authorities said more than 15,000 explosive items had already been cleared during the broader operation, but the latest mission turned deadly when the blast occurred, also injuring two others.

The incident highlights the long-term dangers of unexploded munitions, which can remain hazardous for years after conflicts, complicating recovery and agricultural activity in affected regions.
