Vatican City: Pope Leo and Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally met for the first time at the Vatican in a symbolic moment for relations between the Catholic Church and the Church of England. The two leaders exchanged gifts, held private talks, and prayed together in a historic chapel.

Mullally, the first woman to lead the global Anglican community of around 85 million people, described the meeting as a privilege and stressed the importance of strengthening ties between the churches. She also praised the pope’s strong global messaging, particularly on war and justice.

Pope Leo noted that while progress has been made, challenges still remain, but urged continued cooperation. The two churches split in 1534 when King Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church after being denied an annulment by Pope Clement VII, leading to centuries of division.

Despite differences—such as the Catholic Church not ordaining women and restrictions on priestly marriage—both sides highlighted a shared commitment to dialogue, unity, and working together in faith.
