VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV has called for atomic energy to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes, marking the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Speaking from the Apostolic Palace during the Regina Caeli prayer, the 70-year-old American pontiff stated that the 1986 explosion ‘marked the conscience of humanity’ and remains a stern warning against the risks of increasingly powerful technologies.
The Pope expressed his hope that ‘discernment and responsibility’ would prevail at all decision-making levels to ensure that nuclear energy serves life rather than threatening it.
His appeal follows a 11-day pastoral visit to Africa and comes at a time of heightened global concern over nuclear safety.
Reflecting on the tragedy in Ukraine, which remains the world’s worst civilian nuclear disaster, the Pope prayed for the victims and the ‘liquidators’ who suffered from radiation exposure, while urging world leaders to prioritize a future marked by peace and serenity.
