MOSCOW : The recent drone strike on the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant represents a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
According to Moscow-installed authorities, a Ukrainian drone targeted the facility’s transport shop floor, resulting in the death of a transport worker. This incident adds to a series of mutual accusations, with both nations claiming the other is courting a nuclear catastrophe at Europe’s largest nuclear plant.
The plant, currently in cold shutdown, remains a critical flashpoint as it sits near the volatile front line in southern Ukraine. Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom recently reported that the facility suffered its 15th blackout since the occupation began, highlighting the precariousness of its radiation safety.
As Ukraine marks the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, President Volodymyr Zelensky has labeled such Russian actions ‘nuclear terrorism.’ This latest fatality underscores the high human and environmental risks inherent in militarizing nuclear infrastructure during active warfare.
