Athens: French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday grouped U.S. President Donald Trump with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping, describing them as leaders increasingly aligned in opposition to Europe.
Relations between Macron and Trump, once notably cordial have cooled in recent months, with the White House openly expressing frustration over Europe’s refusal to support the U.S. in its conflict with Iran.
Speaking during a visit to Athens alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Macron urged European nations to recognize the gravity of the moment and assert their influence globally,a recurring theme throughout his presidency.
“We should not underestimate that this is a unique moment where a U.S. president, a Russian president, and a Chinese president are all opposed to Europe,” Macron said. “This is the moment for us to wake up.”
He reiterated his long-standing call for Europe to strengthen its own security framework rather than relying heavily on the United States, emphasizing the need to reinforce the European pillar of NATO. Macron also raised concerns about uncertainty surrounding Article 5 the alliance’s core principle of collective defense, warning that doubts over its reliability are effectively weakening NATO’s cohesion.
Meanwhile, leaders from Spain and Italy were compelled to defend their NATO contributions after reports suggested the U.S. administration is considering punitive measures against allies that chose not to participate in the Iran conflict. Trump has repeatedly questioned NATO’s commitments and criticized the alliance for failing to support Washington’s military efforts, further fueling concerns over unity within the bloc.
