Hundreds of firefighters battle Japan forest blazes

TOKYO: A massive firefighting operation is underway in northern Japan as hundreds of emergency responders and military personnel battle out-of-control wildfires. Since breaking out three days ago, the blazes have scorched approximately 700 hectares (1,730 acres) of mountainous forest in the Iwate region.
The severity of the situation has prompted authorities to urge more than 3,200 people to evacuate their homes. In the town of Otsuchi, the air is thick with smoke that can be smelled up to 30 kilometers away.
To combat the spreading flames, a specialized task force of 1,300 firefighters and Japan Self-Defense Forces troops has been mobilized. The aerial assault includes a dozen helicopters dropping water on the valley to protect residential areas.
At least eight buildings have been destroyed by the fire, though officials confirmed that all residents successfully evacuated before the structures were lost.
This surge in wildfire activity is being linked to increasingly dry winters, which scientists warn are becoming more frequent due to climate change.
While crews continue to spray forests near endangered homes, local residents remain hopeful that forecasted rain will eventually provide the necessary relief to extinguish the persistent blazes.
