Lima : Peru’s presidential election result will not be finalised until mid-May as electoral authorities continue reviewing challenged ballots from last Sunday’s vote.
With 93% of ballots counted, right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori is leading with 17%, according to official figures. Under Peru’s electoral system, the top two candidates will advance to a second-round runoff.
A close contest is unfolding for second place between left-wing candidate Roberto Sanchez with 12% and ultra-conservative candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga with 11.9%, with the margin between them remaining narrow.
Election officials said the delay is due to the review of more than 15,000 challenged ballots, covering both presidential and legislative races. The final results are expected only after this process is completed.
Lopez Aliaga has been one of the most vocal critics of the delay, alleging fraud without evidence and calling for the election to be annulled, while also urging supporters to protest. Sanchez has also raised concerns, calling for investigations into organisational issues.
