US Supreme Court Backs Chevron in Ruling That Could Shape Environmental Lawsuits

Washington DC : The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled unanimously in favor of Chevron, allowing a lawsuit over wetlands damage in Louisiana to be moved from state to federal court.
The case involves coastal wetlands harmed by crude oil production during World War II. Chevron argued it was acting as a contractor for the U.S. military at the time, placing the matter under federal jurisdiction—a position the court upheld.
A Louisiana jury had earlier ordered Chevron to pay $745 million for restoration efforts of wetlands damaged by crude oil production during World War II, but the ruling now shifts the case to federal courts, which are often seen as less favorable to environmental claims.
The decision could influence similar climate-related lawsuits, including cases involving Exxon Mobil and Suncor Energy, which are also pushing to have such cases heard in federal courts.
