Dubai: Dubai has completed its first purpose-built flying taxi station, with commercial air taxi operations expected to begin by the end of the year, authorities in the emirate announced on Thursday.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed visited the city’s first electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) Air Taxi Station, according to Dubai’s media office.

The facility, described as the first fully completed flying taxi station of its kind in the world, is located near Dubai International Airport and will serve as the main hub for air taxi operations.

The four-storey station covers 3,100 square metres and includes a two-level car park, two take-off and landing pads, charging infrastructure for electric aircraft, and climate-controlled passenger areas. Officials said the station will be able to handle up to 170,000 passengers annually.

Three more flying taxi stations are planned in the first phase, connecting key locations including Downtown Dubai, Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina.

Flights will be operated by Joby Aviation, which has exclusive operating rights for six years.

Authorities said journeys such as Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah are expected to take around 10 minutes, compared with roughly 45 minutes by car.

The electric aircraft will carry a pilot and up to four passengers, with speeds reaching about 320 km/h. Officials added fares are expected to be comparable to premium ride-hailing services.

Dubai aims to become the world’s first city to roll out a city-wide commercial aerial taxi network as part of its broader push for smart and sustainable mobility.
