Over 250 Missing After Boat Capsizes in Andaman Sea
At least 250 people, mostly Rohingya refugees, are missing after a boat capsized in the Andaman Sea while en route to Malaysia, according to UN agencies.
Officials said the vessel had departed from Teknaf in southern Bangladesh carrying a large number of passengers, including both Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals.
According to the Bangladesh Coast Guard, nine survivors — including three Rohingya and six Bangladeshis — were rescued on April 9.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration said the incident was likely caused by overcrowding, combined with strong winds and rough sea conditions, which led to the vessel losing control and sinking.
Search efforts and concerns continue as authorities monitor the situation following the tragic incident.
