GCC Secretary-General Briefs European Parliament, Praises EU Support on Iran
Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, praised the European Union for its supportive stance toward GCC countries in response to Iranian attacks, describing them as a direct threat to regional and international security.
He made the remarks during a briefing to the Committee on Foreign Affairs at the European Parliament in Brussels, chaired by David McAllister.
Albudaiwi noted that the meeting comes at a sensitive time globally and regionally, highlighting the importance of dialogue and cooperation between the GCC and the EU. He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage with European lawmakers and commended efforts to strengthen relations.
He warned that escalating actions by Iran pose a serious threat to stability, noting that attacks have targeted civilian and economic facilities in GCC countries, causing casualties and damage. He stressed the GCC’s strong condemnation of these actions and the need for firm international response.
The Secretary-General called on the international community, including the United Nations Security Council, to play a greater role in maintaining peace and supporting de-escalation. He also welcomed European support for key international resolutions addressing the situation.
He further emphasised the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure, noting its critical role in global energy supplies and trade routes.
Albudaiwi highlighted that GCC-EU relations, spanning decades, are becoming increasingly important amid global challenges, calling for expanded cooperation in areas such as energy, technology, infrastructure, and logistics.
He concluded by reaffirming the GCC’s commitment to regional and international stability, expressing hope that upcoming initiatives will further strengthen the partnership between the GCC and the EU.
