UAE Vice President, Jordan PM attend signing of railway agreement

His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, and Dr. Jafar Hassan, Prime Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, attended the signing of an agreement to develop a railway network in Jordan and establish the UAE–Jordan Railway Company.

According to the Emirates News Agency, the project includes the construction and operation of a 360-kilometre railway linking mining areas in Al Shidiya and Ghor Al Safi to the Port of Aqaba. The railway is expected to transport up to 16 million tonnes annually of phosphate and potash, with an investment of $2.3 billion.

The agreement was signed by Suhail bin Mohamed Al Mazrouei and Nidal Al Qatamin, and provides for the establishment of the UAE–Jordan Railway Company as a joint venture between L’IMAD Holding Company and Jordanian partners.

His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed highlighted that the agreement supports bilateral cooperation and sustainable development, reaffirming the UAE’s commitment to strengthening strategic relations.

Dr. Al Qatamin said the project will reduce transport costs, enhance competitiveness, and create job opportunities.

The agreement builds on the investment deal signed in late 2023 and supports economic development, drawing on the expertise of Etihad Rail.

Prior to the signing, both sides held talks to review relations and discuss ways to enhance cooperation.
