Ljubljana: Zoran Stevanovic, leader of the Truth (Resnica) movement, has been elected as the new speaker of Slovenia’s parliament after winning 48 votes in a secret ballot.
He was supported by opposition parties, including the Slovenian Democratic Party led by Janez Janša and New Slovenia. However, lawmakers from the previous ruling coalition—Freedom Movement, Social Democrats, and the Left—opposed his election, warning it could lead to the formation of a new government under Janša.
The Truth movement secured five seats in the March 22 elections and is now seen as an important player in forming the next government. The Freedom Movement won the most seats with 29, followed closely by the SDS.
Earlier in the day, parliament officially confirmed all elected members, marking the start of the new legislative term.
