Amsterdam: Tesla has received approval to deploy its “Full Self-Driving Supervised” (FSD) system on public roads in the Netherlands, marking the first such authorization in Europe.

The approval was granted by the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) after nearly 18 months of testing and evaluation. The regulator said the system, when used correctly, can contribute positively to road safety.

However, authorities stressed that the technology is not fully autonomous. Drivers remain legally responsible for the vehicle at all times and must stay alert, keep their hands ready, and be prepared to take immediate control. Activities such as using a phone or reading while driving are strictly prohibited.

The system includes continuous driver monitoring. If attention drops, warnings are issued, and in severe cases, the system may be temporarily disabled.

The RDW clarified that the version approved for Dutch roads differs from systems currently in use in the United States, citing variations in software configurations.

The agency also confirmed it will seek broader approval from the European Commission, which could pave the way for adoption across the European Union if member states agree.
