Islamabad: An Iranian delegation met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad ahead of anticipated talks with the United States, according to reports citing Iranian state media and officials.
Iran’s state broadcaster confirmed the meeting, stating that “arrangements for the Iran-US talks will be defined at the conclusion of this meeting.” Pakistani government sources also indicated that the meeting took place over lunch, as Islamabad continues its role as a mediator between the two sides.
The Iranian delegation is being led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, who has reiterated Tehran’s position that the United States must agree to unfreeze Iranian assets before formal negotiations can begin.
Diplomatic sources suggest that, as in previous rounds of indirect engagement, Pakistan may facilitate talks by shuttling between separate rooms with US and Iranian officials, rather than hosting direct face-to-face negotiations.
