A close aide to the supreme leader of Iran Kamal Kharazi has died at the age of 81 after sustaining injuries in an airstrike on his residence in Tehran, Iranian state media reported.

According to reports, his home was targeted on April 1 in what authorities described as an attack by the “American-Zionist enemy” during ongoing military operations. His wife was killed instantly in the strike, while Kharazi suffered severe injuries and had been hospitalised since.

Iranian officials did not confirm whether the airstrike was carried out by the United States or Israel.

At the time of the attack, Kharazi was serving as head of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, a body that advises Iran’s supreme leader on foreign policy matters. Over the course of his career, he also held several senior positions, including advisor to the supreme leader, head of the Center for Cognitive Sciences, and member of the Expediency Discernment Council.

Kharazi served as Iran’s foreign minister from 1997 to 2005 and earlier represented the country as ambassador to the United Nations from 1989 to 1997.
