Caracas:  Venezuela’s interim leader, Edmundo González Urrutia, pledged on Wednesday, to personally oversee the enforcement of a new amnesty law designed to secure the release of political prisoners. Speaking from the capital, González emphasized that the law is a ‘fundamental pillar’ for national reconciliation and the restoration of democratic norms following years of political deadlock.

The announcement follows the recent installation of a transitional government aimed at organizing fresh elections and stabilizing the country’s economy. The amnesty law, which has faced significant pushback from loyalists of the previous administration, seeks to pardon individuals detained during various waves of anti-government protests.

González stated that a dedicated commission would be established to ensure that judicial authorities comply with the legislation without delay or political bias.

The move has been welcomed by international human rights organizations, though they caution that the transition remains fragile. Observers noted that the successful release of high-profile opposition figures would be a critical test of the interim government’s authority. As Venezuela navigates this transition, González reaffirmed his commitment to a peaceful handover of power, insisting that the rule of law must prevail over political retribution to ensure long-term stability in the region.
