Trump asks for $152 million to rebuild Alcatraz and reopen it as a prison

WASHINGTON DC: President Donald Trump has requested $152 million in his fiscal year 2027 budget to rebuild and reopen Alcatraz as a ‘state-of-the-art’ maximum-security prison.
In a post on Truth Social, the President asserted that the facility would house the nation’s most violent and repeat offenders, serving as a ‘symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE.’
The proposal marks a major shift for the island, which has been a National Park and premier tourist destination since its closure in 1963. Historically, Alcatraz was decommissioned due to exorbitant operating costs, as the need to transport all supplies by boat made it three times more expensive than land-based prisons. Critics argue these logistical burdens remain a significant fiscal hurdle today.
Opposition has been swift from California officials and environmentalists, who cite the loss of tourism revenue and the difficulty of modernizing 19th-century infrastructure. While the Bureau of Prisons is reviewing the technical requirements, the project's future rests on congressional approval of the 2027 budget.
