China says US fabricated claims of Panama-flagged ship detentions

China has dismissed allegations from the United States regarding the detention of Panama-flagged vessels as ‘sheer fabrication,’ according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday.
The dispute follows U.S. claims that Chinese authorities had illegally boarded and detained several merchant ships in the South China Sea, citing concerns over maritime sovereignty and international trade laws. Beijing maintains that its maritime activities are entirely consistent with international law and accused Washington of attempting to ‘smear’ its reputation and destabilize regional security.
The diplomatic friction comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Indo-Pacific, where competing territorial claims have led to frequent naval standoffs. Chinese officials emphasized that the vessels in question were undergoing routine inspections related to maritime safety and environmental regulations, rather than being subjected to ‘detention’ as characterized by U.S. State Department briefings. The Ministry urged the United States to stop interfering in regional affairs and to respect the sovereignty of coastal nations.
International maritime observers noted that the rhetoric between the two superpowers reflects a deepening divide over the governance of critical global shipping lanes.
While the U.S. continues to advocate for ‘freedom of navigation’ operations, China views such actions as provocative and a violation of its territorial integrity. As of early April the situation remains a focal point for diplomatic discussions, with both sides calling on the international community to recognize their respective interpretations of maritime law and order.
