Chinese airlines to raise fuel surcharges on domestic flights

BEIJING: Major Chinese carriers, including Air China and China Southern, have announced an increase in fuel surcharges for domestic routes starting April 5. The decision comes as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to drive global oil prices upward, with Brent crude recently surpassing US$100 per barrel.

Under the new pricing structure, passengers will see surcharges rise to 60 yuan for flights shorter than 800km and 120 yuan for longer domestic journeys. Other carriers, such as Xiamen Airlines, Spring Airlines, and Juneyao Airlines, have also confirmed similar adjustments. The move follows significant fuel-related price hikes by international airlines, including Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and Air India, as the aviation industry struggles with increased operating costs following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
