Indonesia Condemns Israel’s Death Penalty Law for Palestinians

Jakarta: Indonesia on Wednesday strongly criticised Israel over a new law allowing the death penalty for Palestinian detainees, urging intervention by the United Nations.

In a statement, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry condemned the approval of the legislation by the Knesset, calling it unacceptable and a violation of justice and humanitarian values.

The ministry said the law breaches international human rights and humanitarian law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which protect the right to life and fair trial.

The Knesset passed the measure on Monday with a 62–48 vote, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supporting it. The law allows executions by hanging, to be carried out by prison personnel granted anonymity and legal immunity.

Indonesia called on Israel to immediately revoke the law and halt actions that violate international law, while ensuring the protection of Palestinian rights, including those of detainees. It also urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take firm action and reiterated its support for Palestinian statehood, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
