FLORIDA: NASA has successfully launched the Artemis II mission, marking the first time humans have journeyed toward the Moon in over 50 years. The Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the most powerful ever built by the agency, lifted off from Launch Pad 39B at 6:24 PM EDT on Wednesday, carrying four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft.

The crew consists of Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. This mission is a historic milestone of diversity and international cooperation: Glover is the first Black astronaut assigned to a lunar mission, Koch is the first woman, and Hansen is the first non-American to fly for NASA.

Over the next 10 days, the crew will travel approximately 250,000 miles from Earth, performing a lunar flyby that will take them further into deep space than any humans in history. While they will not land on the surface, the mission is a critical test of Orion’s life-support and navigation systems, paving the way for future lunar landings.
