KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that Malaysian civil servants will transition to a work-from-home (WFH) model starting April 15. The policy, which applies to ministries, agencies, statutory bodies, and government-linked companies, aims to conserve energy as the nation grapples with the impact of the Middle East conflict on global fuel supplies.
The Prime Minister also confirmed that the cabinet agreed to the measure to reduce fuel consumption and ensure a stable national energy supply. In addition to the WFH policy, the government is slashing the monthly quota for subsidised fuel from 300 litres to 200 litres for eligible citizens.
While unsubsidised fuel remains tied to global market rates, Malaysia’s heavily subsidised unleaded petrol currently sits at RM1.99 per litre(0.49USD). Despite the challenges posed by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Anwar expressed optimism regarding diplomatic talks with Iran to secure the safe return of Malaysian oil tankers belonging to Petronas and Sapura Energy.
