Iranian political system does not depend on one person, says Foreign Minister Araghchi

Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi stated that the Israeli killing of Ali Larijani, the powerful secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, will not deal a fatal blow to the nation's leadership.

Araghchi argued that the United States and Israel fail to realize that Iran’s government does not rely on a single individual. He emphasized that the country possesses a "strong political structure with established political, economic, and social institutions," ensuring that the absence of one leader does not collapse the system.

The minister pointed to the recent assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28 as evidence of this resilience, noting that even after such a significant loss, “the system continued its work and immediately provided a replacement.”

The confirmation of Larijani’s death on Wednesday follows the confirmed killing of Brigadier General Gholamreza Soleimani, the head of the Basij forces. Araghchi insisted that while individuals play influential roles, the political system remains a "very solid structure" capable of maintaining its functions despite the removal of high-ranking figures.

Araghchi concluded by placing the ultimate responsibility for the escalating conflict and its human and financial consequences on the United States. “I will repeat: This war is not our war,” the minister said, adding that “the United States started it and is responsible for all the consequences.”

“We did not start it. The United States started it and is responsible for all the consequences of this war, human and financial, whether for Iran, for the region, or for the entire world,” he said. While political analysts suggest that these targeted killings could eventually lead to qualitative changes within the government, Araghchi maintained that the Islamic Republic will continue to replace any martyred officials and hold the U.S. accountable for the ongoing violence.
