Manama: Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on 'Grey’s Anatomy', has died at the age of 53 following a prolonged battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The actor had publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, describing the neurodegenerative disease as “nasty” in a candid interview. He later shared that his health condition was the reason he missed the 2025 Emmy Awards, where he had been scheduled to reunite with co-star Jesse Williams for a special tribute marking the 20th anniversary of Grey’s Anatomy.

“ALS is a nasty disease… I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head,” Dane said at the time, explaining that his absence from the reunion was not by choice. He admitted he was deeply disappointed about missing what he described as a meaningful moment with colleagues and friends.

Dane portrayed the charismatic Dr. Mark Sloan — affectionately known as “McSteamy” — from Season 2 to Season 9 of Grey’s Anatomy, joining the hit medical drama in 2006. Initially introduced in a recurring role, his character’s immense popularity soon elevated him to series regular status. He later returned for a guest appearance in Season 17 in an episode titled “Breathe.”

Beyond the long-running ABC series, Dane earned acclaim from a new generation of viewers for his role as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria.

Off-screen, Dane partnered with the I AM ALS organization, supporting research and advocacy for those affected by neurodegenerative diseases. He was also set to appear in upcoming projects Into the Beautiful and Family Secrets.

He leaves behind a lasting legacy in television and is remembered by fans worldwide for his talent, presence, and resilience.
