Mexico City: Mexican actor Gerardo Taracena, known for his roles in Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico and Mel Gibson’s 2006 film Apocalypto, has died at the age of 55, the Mexican Academy of Film Art and Sciences announced.
In a statement posted on Instagram, the Academy described Taracena as “fundamental to Mexican cinema,” saying his screen presence left “an intense, honest, and profoundly human mark.” It extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, adding that his work and “unforgettable face” would remain part of Mexico’s cinematic memory.
Born in Mexico City in 1970, Taracena built a respected career in Mexican cinema and received three Ariel Award nominations, often referred to as the Mexican Oscars. The Academy said the nominations recognised a career marked by dedication, expressive power, and a deep commitment to the craft of acting.
Taracena also reached international audiences with roles in major productions. He appeared in Apocalypto before gaining wider recognition for portraying drug smuggler Pablo Acosta in Narcos: Mexico in 2018. The series followed Netflix’s hit Narcos, shifting its focus from Colombia to Mexico’s Guadalajara Cartel, with Diego Luna starring as Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo.
Following news of his death, fans shared tributes online, praising his performances, particularly his portrayal of Zero Wolf in Apocalypto, and remembering him as a powerful and memorable screen presence.
