Washington: President Donald Trump announced that the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will temporarily close beginning 4 July 2026 for approximately two years to undergo extensive renovation and rebuilding work. The closure is slated to coincide with the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.
Trump made the announcement in a post on his social media platform, describing the temporary shutdown as part of a “complete rebuilding” effort designed to transform the iconic performing arts complex into a modern, world-class venue. The president said the plan including financing and construction planning is in place and that closing the center fully during renovation will speed up the work and improve its outcome.
The Kennedy Center’s board of trustees, which Trump chairs and whose membership has shifted under his administration, still needs to formally approve the closure and renovation plans. Trump’s post stated the work would begin on Independence Day and last about two years, during which live performances and public events will be suspended.
The announcement follows tensions and controversy surrounding the venue in recent months, including the addition of Trump’s name to the official title now styled as the Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts and the withdrawal of several major performers from scheduled engagements. Some arts groups and artists have cited objections to those changes or the evolving leadership of the institution.
Supporters of the renovation argue that pausing operations fully will allow construction teams to work more efficiently and elevate the aging complex’s infrastructure, acoustics, seating and public spaces. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the political backdrop of the decision and its impact on Washington’s cultural calendar and the center’s traditional role as a national arts hub.
As plans progress, details about how scheduled performances will be rescheduled, relocated, or otherwise affected during the renovation period have not yet been made public, and officials from the Kennedy Center have not immediately issued formal comments on the closure timeline.
