US withdraws from Paris climate agreement Again

Washinton: The United States has formally withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement, marking the second time the country has exited the landmark global pact aimed at limiting climate change, according to UN confirmation and multiple reports. This action took effect on January 27, 2026, following a formal notification to the United Nations.

Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, the U.S. initiated the withdrawal process by signing an executive order in early 2025 that directed its departure from the accord, which commits nearly 200 nations to curb global temperature rise. The exit makes the United States one of the few countries not party to the climate deal.

Critics contend the move weakens global cooperation on cutting greenhouse gas emissions and may undermine efforts to keep global warming well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. Environmental advocates warn the absence of American participation complicates international strategies to limit climate impacts, putting additional burden on other nations to compensate.

Despite the federal withdrawal, some U.S. cities and states are reaffirming their commitment to climate goals aligned with the Paris accord. For example, Houston has pledged to pursue emissions targets and sustainability plans, even without federal commitment to the pact.

The decision also aligns with broader Trump administration efforts to scale back involvement in international climate frameworks and prioritize domestic energy and economic policies, although it has drawn sharp criticism from climate scientists, world leaders, and environmental organisations.
