Trilateral Peace Talks on Ukraine Set to Begin in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, UAE: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine, Russia and the United States will convene for their first-ever trilateral peace talks in the United Arab Emirates, with discussions scheduled to run January 23, Friday and Jan 24 Saturday. The announcement came after Zelenskyy’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where both leaders signalled progress toward ending the nearly four-year conflict.
Zelenskyy said the two days of talks involving delegations from all three countries represent a rare direct dialogue since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. Officials have described the sessions as a technical meeting with security and settlement objectives, and Zelenskyy noted that documents aimed at stopping the war are “nearly ready.”
The U.S. side, including envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, traveled through Moscow en route to Abu Dhabi, highlighting Washington’s role in coordinating the process. While Russia’s participation has been confirmed, the exact format including whether Ukrainian and Russian delegates will meet face-to-face has not yet been fully disclosed.
The trilateral talks are being viewed internationally as a diplomatic intensification that could set the stage for broader negotiations, though key sticking points notably territorial control and security assurances remain unresolved.
