Washington: US President Donald Trump said a “massive armada” of US naval forces is moving toward Iran, as Washington adjusts its military posture amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while traveling from Davos to Washington, Trump said the United States is positioning a large number of ships near Iran as a precaution. He added that the move is meant to closely monitor the situation and prevent further escalation.
US officials confirmed that a carrier strike group and other military assets are being sent to the region. Warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, along with destroyers and fighter aircraft, have been redeployed from the Asia-Pacific. Additional air defence systems are also being considered.
Trump stressed that the deployment does not mean military action is certain. He said the US hopes to avoid conflict but warned that Washington would respond if Iran resumes its nuclear programme.
The US has previously increased its military presence in the Middle East during periods of heightened regional tension.
