Lake Cargelligo: A deadly shooting in the rural New South Wales town of Lake Cargelligo has left three people dead and another seriously injured, police confirmed on Thursday, triggering a lockdown and major manhunt for the suspected gunman.
Emergency services were called to Walker Street near Yelkin Street shortly after 4:40 p.m. local time following reports of shots fired. Officers arriving on scene discovered two women and a man dead, with a fourth victim a man taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. A crime scene has been established and investigations are underway.
Local authorities have warned that the suspected shooter is still at large, believed to be moving within the town or its surroundings. Law enforcement has deployed heavily armed tactical units and issued geo-targeted alerts urging residents to stay indoors and avoid public areas while the search continues.
Lake Cargelligo, a small community in the Central West of NSW with a population of around 1,400 residents, has been placed under an effective lockdown as police work to locate and apprehend the suspect. Officials have not yet disclosed a motive or the identity of the accused, and police have appealed for public assistance with information.
The shootings mark one of the deadliest firearm incidents in regional New South Wales in recent years and come amid ongoing national discussions around gun safety following the 2025 Bondi Beach shooting. Community leaders and emergency services continue to support residents through what officials have described as a “tragic and shocking” event for the quiet rural town.
