Safety Alert: EU Aviation Agency Flags High Risk in Iran’s Skies

Paris : The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on Friday issued a safety advisory urging airlines not to fly over Iranian airspace, citing elevated risks to civilian aircraft as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East intensify.

In its advisory, EASA pointed to the ongoing unrest in Iran and the possibility of military actions involving the United States, which it said has placed Iranian air defence forces on a heightened state of alert. The regulator said such conditions increase the chance of misidentification of aircraft, a danger that could threaten commercial flights at all altitudes.

The warning issued as a Conflict Zone Information Bulletin specifically encourages airlines to reroute and exercise caution when planning flights over Iran, and to consider alternatives such as corridors over Afghanistan or Central Asia. Some major carriers, including KLM, Lufthansa and British Airways, have already been avoiding Iranian and neighbouring Iraqi airspace even after Iran briefly reopened its skies earlier this week following a temporary closure.

EASA’s alert comes amid a broader climate of instability tied to recent crackdowns on protests in Iran, fears of escalation with the United States and concerns about the presence of advanced air defence systems within the Tehran flight information region. The agency stressed that operators should continue to monitor developments and consider safety contingencies for any flights near armed conflict zones.
