Gold Coast : Former Australian cricket star Damien Martyn has shared an emotional update on his recovery after being hospitalised with a life-threatening bout of meningitis, telling fans “I’m back!” following his release from hospital.
The 54-year-old, one of Australia’s most stylish batters in the 1990s and early 2000s, fell seriously ill on December 27, 2025, and was rushed to a Queensland hospital, where medical staff diagnosed him with meningitis, an infection that inflames the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. He was placed into a medically induced coma for eight days as doctors battled the infection.
In a message posted on social media after returning home, Martyn described how the disease “took over my brain” and that he had been given only a 50-50 chance of survival. When he first came out of the coma, he could neither walk nor talk, but remarkably, within four days he had regained both abilities, “with the doctors in disbelief,” he wrote.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Martyn said the experience had reminded him “how fragile life is and how quickly everything can change.” He expressed gratitude to medical staff, paramedics, family, friends and the many well-wishers whose support helped sustain him through his recovery. “Bring on 2026 … I’m back!” he concluded.
Tributes and messages of support have poured in from across the cricketing world, with former teammates and commentators alike celebrating his recovery and wishing him continued good health.
