Tehran: A 23-year-old Iranian student, Rubina Aminian, has been killed amid the ongoing nationwide anti-government protests, rights groups report. Aminian, a textile and fashion design student in Tehran, was reportedly shot in the head at close range after joining a demonstration on January 8, according to Norway-based Iran Human Rights. Her family later identified her body among many casualties, and under heavy security restrictions, were forced to bury her by the roadside when authorities denied burial in her hometown. Aminian’s death has drawn sharp international attention as one of the few publicly named victims of the current unrest.
The protests, which began in late December amid deepening economic hardship, inflation, and public frustration with the clerical establishment, have rapidly spread across numerous cities in Iran. Initially driven by economic discontent, they have evolved into wider expressions of dissent against the ruling regime. Human rights groups have documented widespread use of force by security forces, including live ammunition and other crowd control measures, to disperse largely peaceful demonstrators.
International watchdogs have decried the severity of the crackdown, citing unlawful use of force and mass arbitrary arrests. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch reported earlier in the protests that security forces used live ammunition, shockingly aggressive tactics, and other violent measures against civilians, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries within the first days of unrest.
Activist groups, including the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), report that the unrest has resulted in more than 500 deaths so far, including both protesters and security personnel, with over 10,600 arrests nationwide. These figures have not been officially confirmed by Iranian authorities, and access to independent verification is hindered by widespread internet blackouts and communication restrictions.
The escalation has prompted international concern and discussions among global leaders about potential diplomatic and security responses, underscoring the deepening crisis in Iran as the unrest continues.
