A 64-year-old Norfolk woman, Claire Bridger, is currently facing trial at Norwich Crown Court after allegedly stabbing her estranged husband, Keith Bridger, upon discovering he had euthanised their two rescue dogs without her consent. The court heard that the incident occurred in July last year when Bridger visited her husband’s home to discuss mediation costs for the animals. Prosecutors described a scene of "uncontrolled rage" where Bridger, becoming hysterical after learning the dogs were dead, lunged at her husband with a knife, inflicting life-threatening wounds to his chest and abdomen.
The couple, who had been together for nearly 40 years before separating, had adopted the rescue dogs during the 2020 lockdown, but the animals reportedly suffered from severe behavioural issues. While Keith Bridger claimed he felt euthanasia was the "only option" due to housing constraints and failed rehoming attempts, the prosecution emphasised that his wife was left entirely in the dark regarding the decision. Although she has admitted to wounding with intent, Bridger denies the charge of attempted murder, leaving the jury to determine whether the attack was a calculated attempt on his life or a spontaneous explosion of grief and anger.
