Saudi Arabia sees record-high executions in 2025

Manama: Saudi Arabia carried out a record 356 executions in 2025, marking the highest annual figure ever recorded in the kingdom. Official data indicates a significant increase from the 338 executions conducted in 2024, representing the second consecutive year of record-breaking numbers.

According to data compiled by Agence France-Presse (AFP), a substantial majority of the cases were linked to narcotics offenses. Out of the total 356 individuals executed, 243 were involved in drug-related crimes. Analysts suggest this surge is a direct result of Riyadh’s ongoing "war on drugs," which saw a resumption of capital punishment for narcotics at the end of 2022 following a three-year suspension.

The crackdown has particularly affected foreign nationals, who comprise a large portion of those convicted in narcotics cases. Authorities have intensified security measures, including increased highway checkpoints and border inspections, aimed at curbing the trafficking of Captagon, an illicit stimulant that remains a significant regional challenge.

While Saudi authorities maintain that the death penalty is a necessary measure to uphold public order and is only applied after exhaustive legal appeals, the figures have drawn attention from international observers. Critics argue the rising numbers contrast with the kingdom’s "Vision 2030" initiatives, which seek to promote a more open and modern global image as the country prepares for major events like the 2034 World Cup.

The kingdom remains a major market for illicit stimulants. However, officials emphasize that the strict legal proceedings are essential for national security and the protection of society from the growing threat of drug trafficking.
