Bangladesh Grieves Sharif Osman Hadi’s Death Amid Tensions and Protests

Dhaka: Bangladesh held a national day of mourning on Saturday for Sharif Osman Hadi, a key figure in the 2024 student-led uprising, whose death sparked two days of unrest. Security was tight in Dhaka as Hadi’s funeral took place at the parliament complex, with flags at half-mast nationwide. Earlier protests had included arson and vandalism targeting political figures’ homes, cultural centres, and major newspapers, leading several organisations to suspend activities.

Hadi, 32, spokesperson for the Platform for Revolution (Inqilab Moncho) and a prospective parliamentary candidate, died in Singapore after being shot by masked attackers. His killing reignited public anger, with calls for justice, extraditions, and accountability, amid speculation that the suspects fled abroad, fueling demonstrations across major cities.

The unrest also highlighted lingering grievances against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ousted in 2024 and later sentenced to death for her crackdown on protesters. While the interim government condemned the violence, families of victims remain uncertain that justice will be served, underscoring ongoing political tensions in the country.
