U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appears unlikely, adding that the United States may need to provide limited air support to help Europe reach a peace agreement to end the war.

In an interview with The Daily Caller at the White House, Trump said his plan to stop the conflict includes security guarantees, “even if that means American planes in the sky.” However, he stressed that the war “is not our war.”

“Between five and seven thousand people, most of them young, are being killed every week,” Trump said. “If I can stop that by having a plane fly over occasionally, the main responsibility will still be on Europe. But we will support them if it leads to results.”

Trump ruled out sending U.S. ground forces to Ukraine but said security assurances could be necessary for any settlement. He also noted that the U.S. is not directly funding the war. “We are selling equipment to NATO, not Ukraine. NATO pays for it. That’s an important difference,” he said.

The president said he is seeking to bring the conflict to an end as quickly as possible. “I inherited this war, and all I’m trying to do is put out the fire,” he said. “I’ve done this before with other conflicts that lasted for decades, and I was able to resolve them.”
