China has warned Germany against “inciting confrontation” after a German official accused Beijing of becoming more aggressive in the Asia-Pacific region.

Germany’s foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, made the remarks during a visit to Japan, saying China had repeatedly threatened to change borders and the status quo in areas including the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas. He stressed that any escalation in the region could have serious consequences for global security and the world economy.

“China’s increasingly aggressive behaviour also affects Europe. Fundamental principles of global coexistence are at stake,” Wadephul said.

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the situation in the East and South China Seas “remains generally stable.” She urged countries to resolve issues through dialogue rather than “hyping up tensions.” Mao also described Taiwan as “China’s internal affair.”

During the visit, Wadephul also criticized China for supporting Russia in its war in Ukraine. He said China supplies Russia with key goods and is a major customer for its oil and gas, helping Moscow continue its military campaign.

Wadephul added that strong security guarantees for Ukraine are essential, especially as leaders from the US, Europe, and Ukraine met in Washington to discuss ways to achieve a lasting and fair peace.

“Ukraine must be able to defend itself effectively, even after a ceasefire and peace agreement,” he said.
