A police officer was killed and another injured after armed men opened fire on security forces in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province, local news agencies reported on Saturday.
According to police, the gun battle broke out in the city of Iranshahr when officers clashed with the attackers. The assailants were wounded but managed to escape, and security forces have launched a manhunt to track them down.
The Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice) later claimed responsibility for the attack on social media. The group, which operates from across the border in Pakistan, has been blamed for a string of deadly assaults in the region in recent years.
Sistan-Baluchistan, one of Iran’s poorest provinces, is home to a large Sunni Baluch minority and has long been a hotspot of violence involving separatist rebels, extremist groups, and drug traffickers.
This latest incident comes just weeks after a July 26 attack on a courthouse in the same province, which killed at least six people and was also claimed by Jaish al-Adl.
