Ferry with 280 Onboard Catches Fire, Passengers Jump Into Sea to Escape in Indonesia
Panic and chaos broke out at sea as a ferry carrying 280 people caught fire off the coast of Indonesia on Sunday afternoon, forcing terrified passengers to jump into the water to save their lives.
The incident occurred around 1:30 PM local time, when flames suddenly erupted on the KM Barcelona V vessel. Thick black smoke began pouring from the lower deck, quickly engulfing the ship and leaving passengers with no choice but to abandon it.
Shocking videos shared online show men, women, and children in bright orange life jackets leaping from the burning ferry into the sea. The sky was clouded by dark smoke as screams and cries for help echoed across the water.
One of the most chilling moments was captured live on Facebook by a passenger, Abdul Rahmad Agu. With visible panic in his voice, he pleaded for help while filming the flames behind him.
“Help, the KM Barcelona V is on fire. There are still many people on board. We are burning at sea… we need help… fast,” he cried as his phone camera shook.
Rescue operations were launched immediately, though there are fears that some passengers may still be trapped onboard. Authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the fire or report any casualties, but emergency crews continue their efforts to save lives and bring the situation under control.
The Indonesian authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident.
