The X-Men are people born with strange abilities in a world that fears them, led by a telepath called Professor Xavier. For years they were the biggest Marvel characters Marvel could not use—the film rights belonged to a rival studio, Fox, until Disney bought it in 2019.
On Friday, at Disney's D23 fan event in California, studio boss Kevin Feige finally revealed the new team. Sadie Sink, of Stranger Things, plays Jean Grey. Kit Connor, of Heartstopper, plays Cyclops. Christopher Abbott is Professor Xavier, with Samara Weaving, Inde Navarrette and Maya Boyd as Emma Frost, Rogue and Storm. Adam Driver plays the villain, Mister Sinister.
"We're here to talk about the X-Men," Sink told the crowd, after months of being unable to confirm her role.
The film opens on 5 May 2028, five months after Avengers: Secret Wars ends Marvel's current run, and it is designed to start the next one. It still has no title. Disney's own calendar lists it as "Untitled X-Men".
