Netflix Launches ‘Playground’ App, Turning Kids’ Screen Time Into Interactive Play
It usually starts with a familiar scene - a child watching their favorite cartoon on a tablet, completely absorbed, while a parent quietly wonders how long is too long for screen time. Netflix is now stepping into that moment with a new idea that tries to change how that experience feels altogether.
Netflix is reimagining how young children interact with screens through its new app, Netflix Playground, designed for kids aged eight and under. Instead of just watching their favorite shows, children can now step inside them - playing, exploring, and learning alongside familiar characters.
The app, available as a free add-on for Netflix subscribers, transforms smartphones and tablets into a safe, interactive space. It comes with no ads, no in-app purchases, and no hidden costs, and many features even work offline, making it a handy companion for travel or quiet time on the go.
Netflix Playground is already available in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, and will roll out globally on April 28.
Inside Netflix Playground, beloved characters come to life in new ways. Children can join Peppa Pig in playful mini-games like making smoothies or caring for animals, solve puzzles with Sesame Street friends like Elmo and Cookie Monster, or dive into colorful Dr. Seuss-inspired stories. There are also jigsaw puzzles, sticker books, coloring activities, and simple educational games designed to feel like play rather than learning.
Netflix isn’t stopping there. The platform is also expanding its preschool lineup with fresh content and returning favourites. A new series, Young MacDonald, introduces a musical twist on farm life, while shows like Trash Truck and The Creature Cases are returning with new seasons. Familiar titles including Ms. Rachel, Sesame Street, and CoComelon Lane are also getting new episodes.
What sets the move apart is Netflix’s push toward combining entertainment with interaction. Instead of passive viewing, children are encouraged to engage with stories, making screen time more active and creative.
For parents, the app also comes with upgraded controls and profiles, helping them manage what their children watch and play more easily.
With Netflix Playground, the streaming giant is betting on a simple idea: if kids are going to use screens, they might as well step into the story.
