PARIS: At least four people have died after a small boat carrying migrants capsized in the English Channel early Thursday morning. The incident occurred off the coast of Wimereux, northern France, as dozens of people attempted the perilous journey to the United Kingdom.

French maritime authorities launched a large-scale search and rescue operation involving helicopters and multiple rescue vessels after the overcrowded craft ran into distress shortly after departing. Emergency teams managed to rescue more than 50 people from the frigid waters, several of whom were treated for severe hypothermia upon being brought back to shore.

The tragedy underscores the persistent dangers of the world’s busiest shipping lane, which has seen a surge in crossing attempts despite increased patrols and political efforts to curb the route. This latest incident brings the death toll in the Channel to its highest level for the month of April in recent years.

Regional officials in France expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, blaming human smuggling networks for putting vulnerable people in unseaworthy vessels.

Meanwhile, the UK Home Office reiterated its commitment to dismantling the ‘vile trade’ of people smuggling, though human rights organizations continue to call for safer, legal routes for those seeking asylum.
