OpenAI has acquired TBPN, a popular technology-focused talk show followed closely by Silicon Valley insiders, as part of a broader push to influence public discussions around artificial intelligence.
The announcement was confirmed by TBPN co-host John Coogan at the start of Thursday’s broadcast, emphasizing that the deal was genuine and not an April Fool’s prank. Co-host Jordi Hays also remains part of the show.
TBPN, which streams daily from Los Angeles, features interviews with startup founders, venture capitalists, and prominent figures in the tech industry. The show is broadcast across major platforms including YouTube, Spotify, and X, and is known for its signature segment where guests celebrate fundraising announcements by striking a gong.
Coogan described the acquisition as a “full circle moment,” citing his long-standing relationship with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who backed his first startup in 2013. Their connection dates back to Y Combinator, where Altman previously served as president.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer Fidji Simo said the acquisition would help the company engage more directly and transparently with the public at a critical time for AI development.
She noted that as OpenAI works toward advancing artificial general intelligence, it also carries a responsibility to foster informed and constructive conversations about the societal impact of the technology.
Simo added that TBPN will retain full editorial independence, continuing to select its guests and produce content without interference—an arrangement she said is essential to maintaining the show’s credibility.
