Apple and google joins hand for a Multi-Year AI collaboration

California: In a landmark collaboration, Apple Inc. and Google LLC have entered into a multi-year agreement under which Apple will base the next generation of its Apple Foundation Models on Google’s advanced Gemini artificial intelligence models and cloud technology. The partnership was confirmed in a joint statement released by both companies, marking a significant development in the competitive AI landscape.

Under the deal, Google’s Gemini models will serve as the foundation for future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized and capable version of Siri expected to debut later this year. The move signals Apple’s shift toward integrating external AI expertise to accelerate enhancements to its AI offerings after earlier internal development challenges.

“After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users,” the joint statement said, adding that Apple Intelligence will continue to operate on Apple devices and via Private Cloud Compute while maintaining the company’s industry-leading privacy standards.

The collaboration deepens the longstanding relationship between the two tech giants, building on existing frameworks such as Google’s role as the default search engine on Apple devices. Analysts view the agreement as a strategic move that could help Apple close the gap with competitors in generative AI while giving Google a broader footprint in powering AI features across billions of devices.

The announcement has also drawn commentary from industry figures, with some raising concerns about increased concentration of AI influence in Google’s hands, though Apple has sought to reassure users by emphasising its continued commitment to data privacy and on-device processing.
