Election results have ensured continuity at Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) as Tojjar-22 swept the polls by winning all 18 board seats.

The two reserve seats were won by Yaqoob Al Awadhi and Faisal Suleiman Al Nasser. The polling on Saturday began at 8am in the morning and continued until 10pm.

The head of elections committee, Adel Al Maskati, said that businessmen representing 3,121 commercial registers took part in the electoral process. Scores of businessmen flocked to Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Sanabis on Sunday to cast their ballots for electing the new board of directors at BCCI.

The election follows energetic campaigns led by Tojjar Bloc, Riyadha Bloc and many independent candidates. Those elected will constitute the 30th board of directors at the Chamber, which was set up in the year 1939.

Unlike previous elections, many young businessmen as well as woman entrepreneurs were seen actively taking part in the voting process, highlighting the transformation the Kingdom’s business sector has been witnessing.

Dr Abdulla Bader Al Sada, Acting Chief Executive Officer of BCCI, said the election process has been an historic one in terms of setting a new revolution through the exploration of latest technologies in registration, data collection and analysis and voting.

Vote for continuity to ensure sustainability and growth will be the major theme of Tojjar-22 Bloc at the upcoming BCCI elections that will be held on March 19, 2022.

Earlier, Speaking to The Daily Tribune, Sameer Nass said: “During the past four years, we have raised many matters that affect the economy and businessmen of the country.

Our voice was highly considered and respected by the leadership, government and parliament. They have always been taking our opinion with regard to economic matters.

“We were involved in the formulation of a stimulus plan for protecting the economy and businessmen. We were one of the inspirations behind BD100 million Bahrain Liquidity Support Fund launched to support businesses by the Ministry of Finance and National Economy along with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Tamkeen and a number of banks.

“We carried out vital studies on revitalizing the economy during the most challenging times. We were part of the economic strategies formulated in line with Vision 2030. I must say that we fought more for the SMEs as they constitute nearly 95 per cent of the Chamber membership.

Our efforts in this direction have had many victories, for instance our efforts helped SMEs gain advantage over obtaining government tenders.

“We have made nearly 350 recommendations to the government to boost the economy in the next 20 years encompassing sectors such as tourism, medical tourism, ICT and so on. Many of these recommendations have been taken positively by the government and the post-pandemic recovery plan has been mainly based on them.”
