Customers upset over ‘buy two get one offer’ at Bahrain Duty Free

The Bahrain Duty Free staff at the Bahrain International Airport are allegedly flouting rules regarding the sale of liquor bottles.

A directive issued by the authorities concerned stipulates the sale to one-litre liquor or 12 cans of beer per passenger while the staff often sell extra bottles without apprising the rule to customers, according to sources.

Sources say many a time these customers end up being caught by men employed by Gulf Handling Company at the exit doors, who fine them BD10 for carrying excess liquor apart from seizing the extra bottles.

Speaking to Tribune, a passenger who had to pay BD10 fine, said, “If a passenger buys two bottles of liquor the staff bills them without informing them about the violation.

“The same staff puts a seal on the bill mentioning ‘custom allowance informed’, making it easy for the men standing at exit doors, to catch and fine us. Why can’t they inform us prior to billing that only this much quantity of liquor is allowed outside?”

Another passenger, who also had to pay fines, demanded strict action against Bahrain Duty-Free staff who are selling bottles without “informing the limits to customers”.
